What Does a Typical Day of Film Set Catering Look Like From a Caterer’s Perspective?

Best Film Catering in London

When you’re watching a film, catering probably isn’t something you think about. Behind the scenes, though, feeding a busy cast and crew takes plenty of planning, flexibility and, quite often, a very early alarm clock.

So, what does a typical day of film set catering actually look like from our side of the counter?

It Starts Earlier Than You Might Think

Our day often begins well before the cameras start rolling. Before the crew arrives, there’s food to prepare, equipment to organise and a catering area to get ready.

Early call times usually mean breakfast is the first priority. We want people to be able to arrive, grab something satisfying and get on with their day without catering

Then Lunch Prep Begins

Once breakfast is underway, we’re already thinking about lunch.

A film set isn't like a restaurant where everyone turns up at a predictable time. Scenes can overrun, schedules move and break times change, so flexibility is a huge part of professional film set catering.

We need to have fresh food ready to go while also being prepared for plans to shift. It's one of the reasons experience matters so much when catering for film sets.

Keeping Everyone Going Between Meals

Lunch might be the main event, but crews can be working for many hours either side of it. Having food and refreshments available between meals can make a real difference.

That could mean snacks, lighter bites or something quick for somebody who only has a short window between jobs.

Expect the Unexpected

Ask any film caterer what a normal day looks like and you'll probably get a similar answer: there isn't really a normal day.

Locations change. Weather changes. Timings change. The number of people needing food can change.

Our job is to adapt without making those changes somebody else's problem. Good catering should fit around the production, rather than expecting the production to fit around us.

And Finally… Wrap

Depending on the shoot, the day might finish after lunch, or we could be providing evening food for a late wrap.

It's hard work, but seeing a hungry crew sit down and genuinely enjoy what you've made is one of the best bits of the job. As we discuss in our blog about keeping film crews energised behind the scenes, good catering isn't simply about putting food on plates. It's about helping people through a demanding working day.

Then it's time to pack everything away, reset and — quite possibly — do it all again tomorrow.
